Archival Summer Student
The Church Council on Justice and Corrections located in Ottawa, Ontario is pleased to offer a 6-week archival assistant position to create a database of CCJC archival resources. The successful candidate will gain hands-on experience providing archival services for a community organization with over forty years of history through the arrangement and digitization of reports, photographs and other documents using equipment, software and controlled vocabulary provided by CCJC. The successful applicant will have an opportunity to develop a practical knowledge of digitization as it is used in an archival environment. The position will be supervised and mentored by CCJC’s Research and Communication Coordinator. A work plan will be developed by the successful candidate in collaboration with CCJC staff.
The work will be conducted in an office environment. The archival assistant will be required to lift and sort through boxes of documents and therefore should be able to lift boxes weighing up to approximately 15 kilograms. The assistant will be trained in general occupational health and safety guidelines and procedures in the office, including how to properly lift heavy boxes to avoid injury.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate will be enrolled in a university or college program in Archival Studies (Archives Technician/ MAS) or a graduate library science/ information studies degree with archival concentration. Relevant experience will also be considered.
Funding for this position is part of the Canada Summer Jobs Program. Eligible students:
- are between 15 and 30 years of age;
- have been registered as a full-time student in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year;
- are Canadian citizens or permanent residents or have official refugee protection status under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act; and
- are legally entitled to work in Canada, according to relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations.
- Foreign students are not eligible.
Compensation: The position pays $11.00/hr for 33 hours per week.
