Please find our letter here in English and French.
CCJC has also prepared a bulletin inserts for our prison facts graphic and our letter. Both can be found here: infographic bulletin insert pdf & jpg, CCJC’s letter bulletin insert, Infographic poster pdf & jpg.
Recently The Church Council on Justice and Corrections has worked in collaboration with Bishop Gary Gordon of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops in the creation of a letter sent to the Prime Minister expressing our concern with the government’s plans to increase the capacity of Canada’s prison system and the introduction of new legislation that will result in higher rates of incarceration.
The concerns expressed in the attached letter were communicated to the PM by Bishop Gary Gordon of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops in October. Furthermore, Bishop Susan Johnson of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada also wrote to the minister of public safety on the same matter.
During restorative justice week in Winnipeg at events sponsored by the Manitoba Interfaith Council’s committee on corrections about fifty church and faith leaders and citizens supportive endorsed and signed the letter which was then sent to the Office of the Prime Minister.
*In addition to sending our letter to the Prime Minister, CCJC has written to the Liberal Party of Canada, the Green Party of Canada, the Bloc Québécois and the New Democratic Party.
In the image below you will find highlights from our research.
We encourage all of you as individuals, as members of faith communities and as Canadians, to consider how these changes will affect your lives and the character of our society. CCJC urges all of our networks to take the time to also express your opinion on these issues.
I tried to print the graphic for a bulletin insert and found that I could only get the upper 1/4 (perhaps) of it on 81/2 by 11″ paper. How can I print a sample?
You might have to play with your printer settings. I know you have to make sure the printer is set to landscape and scaled to fit. The dimensions of the picture are made to fit on a normal piece of paper. I had trouble myself and this was the best solution I could come up with. If you have any suggestions I’d be really glad to hear them.
CCJC has been working hard to improve their material so that it is more accessible to our constituency – churches in particular.
Thanks. I’m still working on this. I was able to get an 8 1/2 x 11″ paper copy through doing exactly what you mentioned. I’m now trying to reduce a portion of the graphic to print in a very brief introductory bulletin article. I’ll let you know if it works.
Eileen
Thanks for your fine work in opposing the costly new jails and longer sentences.
We are working on a letter by two of our Anglican Bishops in support, will let you know when it is finalized. We’ll also seek to educate and mobilize our church members on this issue.

Perhaps attach the downloadable graphic in pdf format – it would solve a lot of the scaling problems.
I’ve posted the infographics in jpg and pdf format. The larger poster is upload via scribd. You can download the pdf at the bottom of the scribd page. My wordpress account doesn’t allow me to upload the larger poster without considerable compression.
It’s always dangerous to believe in something (like “tough on crime” legislation) that is not based on rational and objective evidence.
